I consider myself a magnanimous woman. On the morning of my wedding, my fiancé’s tragic first love returned from abroad. Seeing the hesitation flickering in his eyes, I didn’t scream. "Poppy was diagnosed with stage four," he murmured with pained solemnity, stepping between us. "She just wanted to experience a wedding before the end. Please, don't make a scene." I bolted to the downtown ballroom where Number Four was waiting. He caught me by the double doors, breathless, explaining that his father had threatened to disinherit him unless he married an heiress from old shipping money. For the first time all day, I stood frozen in the marble rotunda. My feet throbbed. My veil was slightly askew. I was out of grooms. Behind me, my parents caught up, panting and leaning on each other for support. My mother dabbed the perspiration from her temples with a linen handkerchief, shooting me a look of deep maternal disappointment. "I always told you your taste in men was garbage," she huffed. "Mom—" "Quiet. Your father and I set up a backup for you months ago. We did the courtship online on your behalf." She checked her watch with calm efficiency. "No need to panic. That ceremony isn't until three this afternoon. We have plenty of time."
